If you have a Pug, the urge to hug them is hard to resist. They are adorable little dogs with a cute wrinkly face. They’re every bit as cute as the plushies and stuffed toys we used to have.
But sad to say, some dogs hate our hugs. According to Stanley Coren, our hugs make our dogs feel trapped. They feel like they can’t run away when danger comes.
Because of that, our hugs may actually raise their stress and anxiety levels. But does that mean we can’t give our Pugs some cuddling?
Do Dogs Like to Cuddle?
Dogs may not like hugs. But they do love to cuddle. So what’s the difference?
What dogs hate are those bear hugs where they are wrapped around your arms. Meanwhile, cuddles are when your dog is physically close to you and snuggle with you. It’s a tender way of showing affection but a comfortable action.
Getting into your lap or snuggling with you while you sleep is okay with dogs. And when they do that, make sure you don’t make them feel trapped. You can wrap one arm slightly around them if you wish.
Be sensitive to your dog’s needs. If they start squirming around, then you might be cuddling them way too much.
Additionally, let your dogs come to you. Don’t force them into cuddles as that may also stress them out.

Pugs and Cuddles
Although dogs love to cuddle, some breeds crave it more than the others. Luckily for Pug lovers, these wrinkly little dogs are one of them.
Pugs are natural cuddlers. They’re eager to please their human companions and will follow you around. They’ll do anything to make you happy—even when they look comical and foolish.
Most of all, Pugs are affectionate. They create strong bonds with their humans.
It’s no surprise they will show it to you all the time by cuddling with you during bedtime. Besides cuddles, Pugs love a good sleep and will need at least 14 hours of sleep a day.
If you want to cuddle while sleeping with your Pug, you should also be warned. These little dogs snore loudly. If you’re a light sleeper, you might wake up to the sound of these engines running.
It’s also easy to cuddle with a Pug. They are small dogs but not as small as the Chihuahua, where you’re almost afraid of breaking them. Pugs have some muscle mass, and they tend to gain weight easily which makes them cuddly.
But a reminder: never make your Pugs obese just for the sake of good cuddles. Obesity can decrease their way of life and lifespan.
Other Breeds that Loves Cuddling
Besides Pugs, here are other breeds you can get or adopt to get some good cuddling. These dogs are affectionate and have an eager-to-please personality. They also come in many different sizes.
- Welsh Springer Spaniel
- Bichon Frise
- Boston Terrier
- English Toy Spaniel
- Australian Shepherd
- Great Dane
- Rat Terrier
Just a piece of advice, these cuddly dogs are prone to separation anxiety. This can be a destructive behavior when they aren’t trained. They often destroy couches and things around the house when left for too long.
Snuggling with your dog can decrease your stress. But learn to train your dog how to be independent. Or at least have someone with them when you’re gone for a long time.
What if Your Dog Doesn’t Like to Cuddle?
Each dog is different. Sad to say, some Pugs may not feel like cuddling with you always. But that doesn’t mean they don’t love you.
Most of all, never try to cuddle with them if it’s clear they don’t want to. Maybe they don’t feel good or they are uncomfortable. Trying to cuddle them will make them feel more stressed.
Here are more ways your dog shows their affection to you:
This may seem like a normal thing, but yawning is a sign that your dog is comfortable with you.
Dogs are always alert. It’s a part of their DNA. But when they yawn, it’s a sign that they are relaxed. They don’t see you as a threat and believe you’re there to keep them safe.
They can also mirror your actions. If you yawn and they yawn, it means they empathize with you.
While it doesn’t directly say “affectionate,” it does say your pet appreciates and loves you.
Licking you is one way for a dog to show their appreciation and love for you. In some ways, it’s their form of a kiss.
Pugs are amazing as pets. They have a gentle nature and are good with anyone and anything. They love their humans and will be devoted to you for the rest of their lives.
If you’re a cuddler, then these dogs are the best breed to have.
